Most of you know me as the ‘hand-selector’ behind N-Koi here in Crewe, but my journey with these ‘living jewels’ started a while ago as a simple enthusiast. However, it was in 2024 when I started undergoing dialysis three times a week, and awaiting a life-changing kidney and pancreas transplant – that my perspective shifted. I realised that life, much like a prize-winning Kohaku, is defined by resilience and quality over quantity.
N-Koi wasn’t just born out of a business plan; it was born out of a lifelong obsession that gave me focus when I needed it most. Today, that same resilience is keeping me going and baked into every fish I select. I don’t just stock tanks; I curate a collection. Because I know firsthand what it means to value something truly special, I’ve dedicated N-Koi to providing that same level of excellence and ‘heart’ to every pond across the UK.
‘The Eye’: What Decades of Keeping Koi Taught Me
Over many years, I’ve seen the hobby evolve, but the fundamentals of a world-class fish remain the same. My ongoing health journey has given me a rare gift: the time to return to basics and refine my ‘eye’ for selection.
When I hand-select a Kohaku, Sanke, or Showa (the ‘Big Three’ Japanese varieties), I’m looking for more than just a pattern. I’m looking for the quality of the skin (Sashi and Kiwa), the strength of the body conformation, and that intangible ‘presence’ that only comes from the best Japanese breeders. Because I’ve spent decades maintaining my own ponds through every imaginable challenge, I don’t just see a product; I see the future of your collection. I know exactly how a young Tosai will develop over the years, and I only bring home fish that I would be proud to keep in my own water.
